چکیده

We present laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) measurements of Xe II (4D7/2) in the FMT2 ion engine plume. Three 605.1 nm beams from a ring dye laser are focused through a single lens into a submillimeter interrogation volume, from which we collect LIF at 529.2 nm. Fourier-transform deconvolution of the LIF spectra returns ion velocity distribution estimates along the three laser beam directions. From this, we calculate axial, radial and vertical components of the mean ion velocity and temperature from 1 mm to 300 mm downstream of the accelerator grid. The error propagation endemic to this off-axis multiplex LIF technique obscures the location of the neutralization plane in axial profiles of axial velocity, while radial sweeps of axial and vertical velocity show no discernable trend. Radial profiles of radial velocity, however, show increasing divergence with radial position.

Characterization of the Fmt-2 Discharge Cathode Plume

Laser-induced fluorescence and emission spectroscopy were used to interrogate the plasma downstream of the discharge cathode in the FMT-2 ion engine. Ion velocities consistent with a potential hill approximately 0.75 cm downstream of the unkeepered orifice were observed at higher powers. The high energy tail, discharge voltage oscillations, and the concentration of Xe III may collectively contr...

Single-String Integration Test Measurements of the NEXT Ion Engine Plume

Measurements were made of a 40 cm ion-thruster plume as part of the single-string-integration-test (SSIT) activity of Phase I of the NASA’s Evolutionary Xenon Thruster (NEXT) project. The NEXT ion engine incorporates design improvements that extend NSTAR power levels and efficiencies. During SSIT, an engineering model (EM2) 40 cm engine was operated using an advanced xenon propellant system in ...

Comparison of Discharge Plasma Parameters in a 30-cm NSTAR Type Ion Engine with and without Beam Extraction

Double Langmuir probe measurements are presented over a two-dimensional array of locations in the near Discharge Cathode Assembly (DCA) region of a 30-cm diameter ring cusp ion thruster. Discharge plasma data taken with and without beam extraction exhibit a broadening of the high on-axis electron temperature region when a beam is extracted. Electron number density and temperature contours are p...

Discharge Chamber Plasma Structure of a 30-cm NSTAR-type Ion Engine

Single Langmuir probe measurements are presented for a two-dimensional array of locations in the near Discharge Cathode Assembly (DCA) region of a 30-cm diameter ring-cusp ion thruster over a range of thruster operating conditions encompassing the high-power half of the NASA throttling table. All data were analyzed assuming an electron population consisting of Maxwellian electrons only yielding...

We present laser-induced fluorescence velocimetry measurements obtained using the Xe I 6s[3/2]2 → 6p[3/2]2 transition at 823.4 nm (vacuum) and the Xe I 6s’[1/2]1 → 6p’[3/2]2 transition at 834.9 nm (vacuum) from the inside and in the near-field plume of a 6-kW Hall thruster. The thruster is operated under seven conditions with discharge voltages ranging from 150 to 600 V, and anode mass flow rat...
